SOIL HEALTH AND AGROECOLOGY
Soil life and biodiversity are at the heart of everything we do at Pemboa Flower Farm. We grow cut flowers and herbs using the most sustainable methods to produce the most beautiful flowers while nurturing and caring for the soil and the surrounding landscape. It is our responsibility to keep the soil alive and share these practices with other growers.
We create our own compost on site, but the vast majority of our nutrients are fed to the soil through careful and selective cover cropping and interplanting. Keeping the earth covered and roots in the ground means we can feed our soil life throughout the year, keep the sequestered carbon in the ground and prevent soil runoff.
Our cultivation area is surrounded by a huge range of perennial wild flowers and grasses, as well as trees and shrubs we have planted over the years. This means we can support the biodiversity both above and below ground.
We grow using agroecological principles, this means a huge commitment to soil life and the land’s ecology, but also in terms of how we sell our flowers and our relationship with the community. Growing sustainably doesn’t mean our flowers need to cost more, in fact, because of our ecological practices we are competitive with imported flowers that are still covered in pesticides and chemicals.
We sell wholesale to florists and shops as well as direct to customers and our local community.
